Abstract:
The article examines the currents status and prospects of ensuring environmentally balanced development of the Lviv agglomeration. The European experience of organizing cooperation between communities in agglomerations in the field of environmental protection has been analyzed. It is emphasized that when it comes to environmental protection the considered European agglomerations share the same common areas of community cooperation: support for the circular economy and waste management, environmental education and uniform standards in the environmental sphere, revival of green infrastructure in agglomerations urban areas, as well as securing funding for environmental initiatives. Additional strategic goals for ensuring environmentally balanced development in each agglomeration usually are tailored, based on current environmental needs. It is argued that while the Lviv agglomeration possesses significant natural resources (forests, lakes, etc.), it faces a number of environmental problems (industrial and transport pollution, pollution by household and industrial waste, etc.). The problem of waste processing and disposal in the Lviv agglomeration has not yet been resolved. The study identifies that the largest nature conservation areas in the agglomeration are concentrated in 4 communities: Ivano-Frankivska, Solonkivska, Lvivska and Zhovkivska communities. Based on the grouping of the communities in the Lviv agglomeration according to the indicators of the environmental component of balanced development, 4 clusters have been identified and a tree of combinations of the communities of the agglomeration according to these indicators has been built. It is emphasized that cluster analysis could become the basis for developing further measures to improve the state of the environment in the communities of the Lviv agglomeration and optimizing the financing of environmental protection costs from community budgets. The main directions of the agglomeration activities to ensure its environmentally balanced development have been proposed.

Keywords: environmentally balanced development, Lviv agglomeration, European agglomerations, environmental protection, circular economy, financing of environmental initiatives.
