Abstract:
The article analyzes the opportunities and directions for forming an effective livestock sector in Ukraine based on the requirements of sustainable consumption and production. It is substantiated that a sustainable approach involves minimizing the negative impact on the environment through the optimization of the feed base, improving animal husbandry, managing waste, reducing soil degradation, and cutting greenhouse gas emissions. The state of the domestic livestock sector is analyzed. The challenges of sustainable livestock development in Ukraine are considered, including those related to military actions, focusing on the need to maintain production and the rapid recovery of the sector in the post-war period. It is emphasized that adaptation to climate change and European environmental standards could be the key to the success of Ukrainian agri-food producers in the European Union market. The research found that sustainable development in livestock farming, with a comprehensive approach, must combine economic efficiency, resource conservation, social stability, and changes in consumer habits. For the successful transformation of the livestock sector towards sustainable development, it is necessary to ensure support from the government, scientific institutions, business, and NGOs. The main directions of sustainable production include: the introduction of innovations, rational use of resources, reduction of the ecological footprint, organic production, ensuring the quality of livestock products, and the formation of sustainable consumer demand. It is proved that the implementation of sustainable development goals in the livestock sector mostly requires adequate financial support. It is determined that the introduction of sustainable practices in livestock farming is influenced by several factors, among which the size of the enterprise, the specifics of the industry, and the overall socioeconomic context in the country play a leading role. It has been concluded that, despite the high initial costs, the need to modernize production processes, and the challenges for small businesses, sustainable development in animal husbandry contributes to long-term economic stability, environmental security, and the improvement of human well-being.
